alrighty then

Hey!

I didn't forgot about you,and I hope you didn't forget about one of the best thrash metal bands from the 1980s because soon I will upload more live and rehearsal tracks I have again.

A little bummed out that some tracks are missing, however that is how I mailed some of these out back in the day. The July 1987 rehearsal is blowing my mind and reminds me again how much I thought MALHAVOC were as great as Destruction, Metallica, and Black Sabbath.

Thanks to my tapetrader friend who was cool enough to loan me the tapes.
I'll be sending him a bunch of more stuff, maybe entice him to look further in his old collections.

MALHAVOC - 1987-12-19 Download

MALHAVOC - Saturday December 19, 1987.FOODSHARE BENEFIT at ILDIKO'S,Toronto.

wish I had some photos from the gig to go with this.

Thanks to a very old tape trader friend, here is the recording I made using a Sony mono walkman-type recorder, enhanced with a better microphone borrowed from another friend that night.
(I recorded most of the bands, but do not have them anymore.)

Fairly sure Malhavoc were playing halfway up the lineup, around 6 pm maybe, and CITY-TV 6'o clock News sent a camera to help the Benefit maybe get some more people in the door since it would still go on for hours.

(cuts in , original tape was not cued right)

03.Empirical Minds
04.Attack from the Sepulcher
05.Trial & Error/From Beyond/Deathtrance

08.Dunwich Horror

Old Videos on youtube

Now that Canada Post's strike is over, I can get back to shipping/recieving mail, which means some really cool oldschool METAL I will share with you...eventually.

For now, let's watch some old music videos -

EDIT: JUST REMEMBERED, the first Malhavoc video might have been for Dunwich Horror, using Walt Disney's FANTASIA, and/or a very ancient cartoon or movie about H. P. Lovecraft's Dunwich Horror.
I have looked on the inetrnet and can't find even on wiki any old films from pre-1980 that would fit what I am thinking of. I only seen the video maybe once or twice years ago, and thought Malhavoc's self-made video of movie clips was on youtube in the last 2 or 3 years.
There are pages for Dunwich Horror there, will keep searching.

Attack from the Sepulcher

"Second video Jimi LaMort made from the demo 'The Age of the Dark Renaissance' in the summer of '86"

'Release' promo video

"MALHAVOC's first 'real' promo video ('Release'). Taken from live footage shot by audience members and edited together by James C. Lots of horror movie clips noticable"...

'Second Image' promo video

Live at the Rivoli - 1991

"filmed in Toronto at the Rivoli club by John Dubiel. You can see a lot of the members of the MALHAVOC family either on the stage or in the audience. This show was after the release of the PUNISHMENTS ep and before the recording of PREMEDITATED MURDER album."

AND....

THE SONG
that fucked up Malhavoc's release and EPIDEMIC RECORDS due to a lawsuit from The Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin
- Dead from the album Premeditated Murder (1992)

WAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTT A MINUTE, JUST STOP EVERYTHING!!
ONE fuckin question though...THIS IS NOT FROM their cd! WHERE did this mix come from as the Zeppelin and Stones samples are missing! ...was Premeditated "re-released" with a different mix?

Hello to the 2 who are visibly "following" this blog ..and maybe another 2 or 3 people

Good news....
I have been told I will get some very old Malhavoc back in my collection. so check back here in a few months.

I read their show last month was good, but have not seen a setlist or audio/video posted anywhere.

In the meantime, enjoy this newsclip from City-TV Toronto, December 19,1987
from the Foodshare Benefit all-day Gig
that Stephanie Heyens helped set up (and Oskar to some extent, but back then, he was kind of mean and crusty on some days like Billy Milano, so I think he stepped away)

Clip has brief shots of the trio, Shrine-era. Only footage that exists, as the cameraman or the tv station would only give James the master tape with maybe a complete song for $100,and he didn't have it back then, or didn't think it was worth it, so they probably taped over it.

That was the show where everybody thought James puked onstage.
I forget the story because I couldn't see from sitting in the very back on the stands, me and a friend were recording it to get a good sound.
Maybe James had dry heaves?
How do you know the date of this show if you have a copy (and have not shared it WITH US ?)
The crowd keeps yelling for a very old song of theirs to be played called "Sineater", but the drummer John C. had said back then he would never play it again.

Thanks to JimiLaMort for uploading it.

Gates of Hell setlist

My copy I taped off the radio is long gone, but it is definitely one of Malhavoc's BEST after their 1986 demo and pre-The Release CD.

I know James,John, and new member guitarist(& keyboards/sampler?) Steve(is that his name?)(ex-Winter Regime) were in the band.
Possibly Rob Wright too.

Here is a ruff b/w mock up for what was gonna be one side of the album cover for our SHRINE album for Diabolic Force/Metal Blade records. Never seen before, this is actually a color painting i have in my closet somewhere for the Epoch of Empirism side of the record. the other side, Age of the Dark renaissance was to have the same art work from the demo.

Sticker

Incredible!
Someone has posted a pic of the sticker that James handed out once. I even had it on my Vantage bass guitar (wonder if the guy who bought it, kept it on there?)

It was kind of large, maybe 5 (wide) x 6 (height) inches.

so, thanks to
http://www.myspace.com/evenmoreobscure1980smetal

here is what I THINK was the sticker for either the song Masque of Red Death,or Dread.

The Apocalypse Club.Toronto.Thursday, November 2nd, 1989

The Apocalypse Club.Toronto.Thursday, November 2nd, 1989.

Malhavoc with drum machine/sequencer,James C.- guitar/vocals,and one or two other guitarists. Can't remember for sure if Rob Wright was in the band yet at that point and onstage, or who the other guitarist was. Well, maybe someone will know and leave a comment.

I found the J card from the cassette recording I made of this show, but not the actual tape.
Might as well give a review.

It might have been one I made with the mono walkman. Usually they were okay. Flat sounding, sometimes a little too much bass, but I was heavily into listening to local HC and metal bands' songs at home, over and over again, especially if I didn't have their demo, or all of their songs on a demo or rehearsal tape I could get.

Ok, the set list for Thursday, November 2nd, 1989.
The Apocalypse Club.(on College Street, near Ossington) was --

1.FLOODER (which later became WILLIAM WILSON)
2.FALLING
3.NO RUNNING (aha! They did play it live! I forgot. I always had the nagging feeling I heard it before I ever seen OVERTHROW using it as an intro tape to their live show).
4.TURN
5.S.C.E.X.
6.LOVE SONG
7.THE DARK HALF

Ok, if it was not this show, then it was at The Rivoli Club, where radio dj/Record Peddler cashier/the 4 eyes picked on by Brian Tailor occasionally - Mr. Chris Twomey, played on the video screen that was rented, an Anton Lavey documentary/history, which ended with a "special message" at the end by Lavey himself onscreen.

One or two techno, or industrial bands opened. I want to say DHI or Digital Poodle, but maybe it wasn't either of them.

Malhavoc, prior to their cd The Release, seemed pretty cool at the time.

HC punks, and thrash/black/death metallers, were kind of open to the idea of not having a live drummer, as many probably heard some Skinny Puppy, Ministry, KMFDM, etc by then. (I know for years, I was checking out college radio station CKLN-FM and listening to all sorts of music).

Radio DJ Chris Sheppard also was playing that type of music among some metal like Overkill or punk like Dayglo Abortions on his weekly late night, dance party, video show on CHCH TV.
I remember being angry they played "Here Today, Guano Tomorrow" at the end of one show and the closing credits rolled over the band and they cut off the song! Still, better than MuchMusic that never showed it at all !

.......so Malhavoc's 40 to 45 minute set was pretty cool. Some headbanging riffs, mostly moody, kind of doomy music. They had a video screen on behind them for most or all of their set. James had figured out what images, and movie clips he wanted the audience to see to understand what he meant / was symbolizing in his songs (because he sang weird and we didn't really know what he was saying).

Probably the coolest part I remember still, was something to do with werewolves/Jekyll & Hyde/ conflict inside people. It might have been revisited throughout the whole set, but the first and last songs seem to stand out more when the screen synched up/told the story perfectly with their music.

I remember standing near the one foot stage, and during one song, all three guitars were playing different notes/chords, and it started feeling like the two halves of my brain were grating against each other, and my stomach started churning, and I wanted to shit and have diarrhea at the same time. I had to step away a few feet, from the line of fire of the PA and the guitar amps! I really felt like throwing up and shitting at the same time.

After the show, I asked others and nobody else seemed to know what I was talking about, and thought that I was crazy and making it up. I mentioned it to James C. some days or weeks later, and he started smiling and laughing and saying "That's EXACTLY what I was hoping to do!" He said he got the idea, but wasn't sure if it was possible or something.

Anyways, no idea if anybody else recorded the show on audio cassette, and still kept it. I don't think I copied my tape for anyone before it snapped/twisted or maybe I recorded over it. (I used normal tapes, instead of chrome, mostly back then, and also listened to the live tapes I made more than albums I bought, and would eventually get bored of them, after listening to them a LOT.)
